Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Wins National Dairy Award

HARRISBURG – The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been awarded a national Honorable Mention in the Outstanding Achievement in Community Partnerships category for its Fill a Glass with Hope® Campaign in the 2016 U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards from the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy®.

“We are honored to be recognized for our Fill a Glass with Hope Campaign,” said executive director Joe Arthur. “However, the real winners are the children and families in central Pennsylvania who receive nutritious fresh milk each week from our partner agencies.”

In collaboration with Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program and Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank launched its fresh milk distribution program in 2014 and was the first of its kind in the Commonwealth ensuring that low-income children, adults and seniors have steady and reliable access to fresh milk. All milk is provided at no cost to the client. Through the public-private partnership, milk is shipped to Harrisburg Dairies by Pennsylvania dairy farmers to be processed for the Food Bank.

The program was so successful that a statewide initiative through Feeding Pennsylvania was launched at the 2016 PA Farm Show. Pennsylvania’s dairy industry is committed to providing fresh milk to families in need through Feeding Pennsylvania’s network of eight food banks, which serves more than 2 million people annually.

In selecting the awards, judges evaluated the nominees’ sustainability practices based on their economic, environmental and community impact, also known as triple-bottom-line success. The independent judging panel — including experts working with and throughout the dairy community — also looked for learning, innovation, improvement, scalability and replicability.

The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, established under the leadership of dairy farmers recognizes dairy farms, businesses and partnerships whose sustainable practices positively impact the health and well-being of consumers, communities, animals and the environment. The awards program is part of the U.S. Dairy Sustainability Commitment, an industrywide effort to measure and improve the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the dairy community.
