Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Receives $65,000 Grant From GIANT Food Stores
Harrisburg, PA (June 1, 2018) – With more than 16,000 children facing food insecurity in York County, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is focused on increasing participation in childhood nutrition programs at school districts within the county.
GIANT recently made a $65,000 grant to the Food Bank to support these efforts. The Food Bank’s School Breakfast Coordinator will work collaboratively with York County school districts including Red Lion, York Suburban, Hanover Public and West York to adopt alternative breakfast models in their schools and increase breakfast participation at the district level.
“Studies show that children who are hungry do poorly in school,” said Joe Arthur, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “Providing nutritious food in school is important and we thank GIANT for once again recognizing the need and supporting our efforts.”
The breakfast programs funded by this grant will also offer education to school administrators, teachers and community leaders to incorporate breakfast into the school day and adopt best practices for all children to eat a healthy breakfast.
“We know the importance a good, nutritious diet plays in the lives of children and we are thankful and fortunate to partner with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank on the school breakfast program,” said Matthew Simon, VP Marketing, GIANT. “Working together, I know we can increase student breakfast participation in York County.”
