The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s annual holiday Turkey Drive kicked-off this week, and for the 14th consecutive year GIANT Food Stores made a donation of 1,000 frozen turkeys in an effort to help the Food Bank supply turkeys to families struggling with hunger during the holiday season.
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank receives thousands of requests for frozen turkeys each year during the holiday season. To meet this demand the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank holds a Turkey Drive in November and December, with an overall goal of 5,000 turkeys to be distributed to families in need. The Food Bank is asking the public to help meet some of that demand by donating frozen turkeys, along with canned fruit/vegetables, instant stuffing, canned/dry gravy mix, and canned pie filling.
“The holidays are a time of very high demand for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,” stated Food Bank Executive Director Joe Arthur. “By distributing turkeys, and the food items associated with a typical holiday meal, we are not only providing a nutritious, traditional holiday meal, but we are providing hope to families and individuals for the coming year. This donation by GIANT will give a thousand families and individuals the memory of a traditional holiday meal that they would not have otherwise.”
“We are ardent supporters of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, who feed hungry families right here in our backyard,” said Christopher Brand, manager community and public relations. “This turkey drive is critical for those in need in our community.”
The Food Bank distributes frozen turkeys (as well as all of the side dishes that make a holiday meal complete) to hungry families during the holiday season, through a network of agencies in 27 Pennsylvania counties. Non-profit partners such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and senior citizen programs will either directly distribute the turkeys or prepare turkeys onsite to serve their clients.
The public can donate frozen turkeys, as well as the ingredients for side dishes at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank office at 3908 Corey Road, Harrisburg during the following hours:
