The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been dedicated to ending hunger for more than 20 years. The Food Bank started as a one-day demonstration project on World Food Day in 1981, and to address the needs of hungry families began permanent operation on October 16, 1982.
Originally, the Food Bank was located in a converted movie theater in Steelton. The Food Bank initiated a capital campaign, raising one and a half million dollars directed to the construction of a brand new warehouse. Then, in 1994, the Food Bank relocated to its current facility in Harrisburg.
Since 1995, the Food Bank’s distribution of food donations in Pennsylvania has increased by approximately 70 percent. To accommodate growing operations, the Food Bank added 15,000 square feet to its facility to increase dry storage and freezer and refrigeration space. The Food Bank’s current 43,000 square foot warehouse is almost 40 percent larger than the original Steelton facility.
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is an independent entity with a Board of Directors consisting of community volunteers. The Food Bank is also a member of Feeding America - the nation's leading domestic hunger-related charity.
