Elder Share Distribution Program

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has the second highest population of residents age 60 and over. This age group represents one of the fastest growing demographic segments of our citizenry.

Tens of thousands of elderly in Pennsylvania live on limited, fixed incomes. Many times they must choose between buying food or paying for medications, especially at the end of the month when financial resources are scant or nonexistent.

According to data gleaned from the national study "Hunger in America 2001", roughly one in ten people served by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank are over 60 years of age. While many of these individuals are helped by member agencies, the Food Bank has taken extra steps to assist seniors in need. Since some seniors face physical barriers in going to a soup kitchen or food pantry, the Food Bank began a direct distribution program to senior citizens residing in subsidized housing complexes in Dauphin County in February 2002. Currently, weekly deliveries of fresh produce, deli dairy items, and other non-perishable nutritious foods are provided to nearly 500 seniors at subsidized housing complexes and community pantries.

During the third week of each month, when food budgets are low, the Food Bank provides these seniors with a supplemental food box that includes canned meats, vegetables, fruits, and nutritious beverages. Additionally, nutrition educational activities are coordinated with volunteer dieticians, health care professionals, and other community partners. These activities not only promote healthy eating habits, but provide an opportunity for social interaction among the senior residents.

C & S Wholesale Grocers, Inc., with headquarters in Brattleboro, Vermont and operating locally from Grantville, Pennsylvania, supports the Elder Share Distribution Program through an initial seed grant of $20,000.
