Mel Curtis and his team at the YMCA of Centre County – Moshannon Valley have always been valuable Food Bank partners in Centre County, PA. When COVID-19 struck, the work they took on was staggering. Immediately when schools closed, Mel and his team fired up their “Travelin’ Table” mobile bus and began traveling to serve meals to children every day. In addition to providing lunch for children, they also provided food for the entire family, including fresh produce and meat and crisis response boxes.  They worked to establish additional mobile distributions in Wingate and Snow Shoe, serving each community two times per month.  They also host a Fresh Express two times per month from the Philipsburg YMCA.

“Kids just want to a part of something. They want to be accepted,” said Mel Curtis. “They want to know there is going to be food there for them the next day, and what we’re going through right now…it’s pretty hard. We want to make sure if a child goes to bed at night, they’re not hungry.”
